olive oil

The same logic now drives dispossession of Palestinian olive groves.
savouryveganvegetarian

Cultural layer

Origin
Eastern Mediterranean (likely Syria/Palestine); domesticated ~6000 BCE
Routes
Phoenician/Greek/Roman colonial expansion planted olive groves across the Mediterranean, Spanish missionaries brought it to the Americas
Context
Olive cultivation literally mapped Greek and Roman imperial borders: wherever they planted olives, they planted permanent claim. Mediterranean diet discourse often obscures this colonial plantation logic, presenting olive oil as ancient and natural rather than as the product of two millennia of monoculture expansion. The same logic now drives dispossession of Palestinian olive groves.

Route

Pending

The routes are written. They are not yet mapped.

This entry's cultural layer already names where it came from and how it moved. What it does not yet carry is that movement as structure: ordered waypoints with real coordinates, and a mechanism on each leg. Until it does, the layer stays an empty slot rather than a drawn line, because a map built from prose would be a guess with a projection under it.

Rite

Kings are made with olive oil. Anointing with it runs through Hebrew, Christian and Islamic practice, the word messiah means the anointed one, and Orthodox and Catholic rites still use it for baptism, confirmation and the last anointing. Olive branches are peace, and the tree lives for a thousand years. In Palestinian practice the harvest is a family and village season, and the trees are also targeted, which makes tending them a political act.
