marjoram

Cultural layer

Origin
The Mediterranean and West Asia; Origanum majorana, softer, sweeter and more floral than its close relative oregano
Routes
Cultivated around the Mediterranean since antiquity and carried into central and northern European cooking, where it outlasted oregano in German and Polish kitchens
Context
Marjoram lost to oregano. They are close relatives, marjoram is the gentler one, and the twentieth-century pizza boom made oregano the household name while marjoram stayed in Polish sausage and German soup. Nothing about the plants decided that. One got attached to a food that scaled, and the other did not.

Route

Pending

The routes are written. They are not yet mapped.

This entry's cultural layer already names where it came from and how it moved. What it does not yet carry is that movement as structure: ordered waypoints with real coordinates, and a mechanism on each leg. Until it does, the layer stays an empty slot rather than a drawn line, because a map built from prose would be a guess with a projection under it.
