squid

Calamari is cheap on menus for reasons that have nothing to do with the abundance of squid.

Cultural layer

Origin
Coastal waters worldwide; eaten across the Mediterranean, East and Southeast Asia, and Latin America, with its ink used as both food and pigment
Routes
A widely distributed catch turned into a global commodity, with squid fishing fleets now among the most intensive and least regulated distant-water operations at sea
Context
Squid ink was writing ink before it was a pasta sauce, which is what sepia means. The fishery is now one of the least governed at sea: distant-water fleets work outside national waters with little oversight and documented forced labour on board. Calamari is cheap on menus for reasons that have nothing to do with the abundance of squid.

Route

Pending

The routes are written. They are not yet mapped.

This entry's cultural layer already names where it came from and how it moved. What it does not yet carry is that movement as structure: ordered waypoints with real coordinates, and a mechanism on each leg. Until it does, the layer stays an empty slot rather than a drawn line, because a map built from prose would be a guess with a projection under it.
