Rite

Wine is the only drink a major religion turns into a body. The Eucharist claims transubstantiation, and Passover fixes four cups on the seder night, each marking a promise of deliverance. Greek and Roman practice poured libations to the dead and to the gods before anyone drank. Islam prohibits it, which shaped the beverage map of half the world. Fermented grape juice has been asked to carry more theology than any other liquid.
