Rite
Cream was the substance witches were accused of stealing. Across Northern Europe a cow that gave no cream had been interfered with, and butter that would not come was countered with charms, hot irons in the churn and rowan in the byre. The household brownie or nisse was paid in a bowl of cream set out at night, and neglecting it brought ruin. The richest thing the farm produced was the thing supernatural attention was assumed to be after.
