Context

In 1621, the Dutch VOC massacred the Bandanese population to seize monopoly control of the nutmeg trade: an estimated 14,000 people were killed or enslaved. The nutmeg trade was so valuable that in the 1667 Treaty of Breda, England traded Run Island, the last Banda nutmeg island not under Dutch control, for New Amsterdam, which became Manhattan. Grenada's flag still features a nutmeg. This is what a spice's biography looks like.

1667, the Treaty of Breda: England gave up Run and kept New Amsterdam. This arc carries no nutmeg. It carries sovereignty, an island traded for an island, and the settlement it kept became Manhattan. The wider settlement also covered Suriname, so the popular one-for-one framing compresses it.
