Rite

Salt seals agreements. A covenant of salt binds a promise in the Hebrew Bible, and the Arabic and Persian obligation of bread and salt makes a host responsible for a guest who has eaten at their table. Spilled, it is thrown over the left shoulder to blind the devil standing there. A mineral that cannot spoil became the substance people swore on, and the superstitions around wasting it outlived the scarcity that produced them.
