Rite

The watermelon is a Palestinian flag. Its red, black, white and green are the flag's colours, so when displaying the flag was banned under Israeli military order after 1967, the fruit stood in for it in paintings and on walls, and it returned as a protest symbol at scale after 2023. A fruit became a way to say something that could not be said. Symbols get chosen for what is available, and a market stall was available.
