mint

The reduction is the point: a herb that carries whole regional cuisines is flattened into decoration the moment it crosses into a tradition that never depended on it.

Cultural layer

Origin
Temperate Eurasia and North Africa; Mentha is a genus, with spearmint (Mentha spicata) the older culinary mainstay and peppermint (Mentha x piperita) a later English hybrid. It has been used around the Mediterranean and across West and South Asia since antiquity.
Routes
Mediterranean and West Asian antiquity, woven into Arab, Persian, and Ottoman cooking, carried into North African tea culture as the spearmint of atay, and into South Asian chutneys and raitas, then globalised as both a flavour and a garnish.
Context
Mint is structural across North African, Levantine, Persian, and South Asian cooking: it is the spine of Moroccan tea, of tabbouleh and yogurt sauces, of coriander-mint chutney. Western kitchens reduce it to a garnish on a dessert plate or a candy-and-toothpaste note. The reduction is the point: a herb that carries whole regional cuisines is flattened into decoration the moment it crosses into a tradition that never depended on it.

Route

Pending

The routes are written. They are not yet mapped.

This entry's cultural layer already names where it came from and how it moved. What it does not yet carry is that movement as structure: ordered waypoints with real coordinates, and a mechanism on each leg. Until it does, the layer stays an empty slot rather than a drawn line, because a map built from prose would be a guess with a projection under it.
