pineapple

Cultural layer

Origin
The Paraná and Paraguay river basins of South America; domesticated by Tupi-Guaraní peoples and already spread across the tropical Americas before 1492
Routes
Taken to Europe, where it became a status object grown in heated pineries and rented out as a table centrepiece; later plantation-farmed in Hawai'i and the Caribbean on colonised land
Context
In eighteenth-century Britain a pineapple could be rented for an evening, displayed rather than eaten, and returned. It was a Tupi-Guaraní fruit standing in for imperial reach. Then Hawai'i was annexed and it became cheap and canned. The same fruit was a luxury and then a commodity, and neither price had anything to do with the people who domesticated it.

Route

Pending

The routes are written. They are not yet mapped.

This entry's cultural layer already names where it came from and how it moved. What it does not yet carry is that movement as structure: ordered waypoints with real coordinates, and a mechanism on each leg. Until it does, the layer stays an empty slot rather than a drawn line, because a map built from prose would be a guess with a projection under it.
