This is how colonialism outlives itself: not in law but in debt.
sweetsavouryveganvegetarian

Cultural layer

Origin
Dual domestication, Southeast Asia and Pacific Islands; spread across tropics by Austronesian seafarers
Routes
Austronesian expansion across Indian/Pacific Oceans, Portuguese/Spanish colonial plantation crop, industrial copra trade
Context
Coconut economies defined colonial Pacific island life: copra, the dried coconut meat processed for oil, became the cash crop that tethered islands to European trading companies. The debt-labor systems created by copra production persisted long after formal colonialism ended, leaving Pacific island economies structurally dependent on commodity prices set elsewhere. This is how colonialism outlives itself: not in law but in debt.

Route

Pending

The routes are written. They are not yet mapped.

This entry's cultural layer already names where it came from and how it moved. What it does not yet carry is that movement as structure: ordered waypoints with real coordinates, and a mechanism on each leg. Until it does, the layer stays an empty slot rather than a drawn line, because a map built from prose would be a guess with a projection under it.

Rite

The coconut is broken at the start of things. In Hindu practice it is smashed before a journey, a building, a business or a vehicle is used, offered whole because it is a fruit with three eyes that is said to stand in for a head, an old substitution for blood sacrifice. Across the Pacific and maritime Southeast Asia it opens ceremonies and welcomes guests. A shell that must be broken to be useful became the standard object for beginning.
