coconut water

The green coconut is still cheaper than the carton in every country that grows one, which is the entire economics of the wellness aisle in a single comparison.
sweetfreshveganvegetarian

Cultural layer

Origin
The tropical Indo-Pacific; the liquid inside a young green coconut, drunk straight from the shell across South and Southeast Asia, the Pacific and the Caribbean
Routes
A local drink everywhere coconuts grow; packaged from the late 2000s into a global wellness commodity, marketed on electrolytes and celebrity endorsement
Context
Coconut water was free at the roadside in a great many places before it was four dollars in a carton. The marketing sells hydration science; what it actually sells is the tropics, sterilised and boxed. The green coconut is still cheaper than the carton in every country that grows one, which is the entire economics of the wellness aisle in a single comparison.

Route

Pending

The routes are written. They are not yet mapped.

This entry's cultural layer already names where it came from and how it moved. What it does not yet carry is that movement as structure: ordered waypoints with real coordinates, and a mechanism on each leg. Until it does, the layer stays an empty slot rather than a drawn line, because a map built from prose would be a guess with a projection under it.

Rite

The green coconut is opened for guests and for gods. In Hindu practice the water is poured in abhisheka over an idol, and the whole fruit is broken at thresholds and beginnings. Across the Pacific and the Caribbean it is what a visitor is handed on arrival. Sterile inside the shell and drinkable straight from the tree, it was the one liquid that needed no vessel and no preparation, which made it the natural thing to offer.
