Cultural layer

Origin
Vanuatu, then across Melanesia and Polynesia; Piper methysticum, a root pounded and steeped into the Pacific's ceremonial drink
Routes
Carried on outrigger canoes across the Pacific alongside taro and breadfruit; banned and pathologized by missionary and colonial administrations; now exported as a capsule for the anxiety market
Context
Kava is governance in a cup: in Fiji and Tonga the sevusevu and the kava circle are how guests are received, disputes settled, and rank made visible. Missionaries tried to ban the circle and the wellness industry now sells the root in capsules: two different ways of refusing to sit in it. The drink never needed extracting from its own protocol.

Route

Pending

The routes are written. They are not yet mapped.

This entry's cultural layer already names where it came from and how it moved. What it does not yet carry is that movement as structure: ordered waypoints with real coordinates, and a mechanism on each leg. Until it does, the layer stays an empty slot rather than a drawn line, because a map built from prose would be a guess with a projection under it.

Rite

The kava circle is a form of government. In Fiji the sevusevu presents a bundle of root to a host village and is the correct way to arrive; the bowl is prepared, clapped over and drunk in an order that states rank. Disputes are settled in it. Missionaries tried to suppress the practice and the wellness industry now sells the root in capsules, which are two different ways of taking the drink out of the circle it exists for.
