Cultural layer

Origin
Global; human honey-gathering documented 15,000+ years ago in rock art; beekeeping formalized in ancient Egypt
Routes
Independent discovery across Africa, Asia, Europe, and the Americas, colonial-era European honeybee introduction to the Americas displaced native pollinators
Context
European honeybee introduction to the Americas was a colonial ecological act: Indigenous peoples called them 'white man's flies' because the bees arrived with settlers and spread ahead of them. Modern colony collapse disorder threatens a pollination system already destabilized by those colonial-era species transfers. This means we are living with the ecological consequences of a 400-year-old decision.

Route

Pending

The routes are written. They are not yet mapped.

This entry's cultural layer already names where it came from and how it moved. What it does not yet carry is that movement as structure: ordered waypoints with real coordinates, and a mechanism on each leg. Until it does, the layer stays an empty slot rather than a drawn line, because a map built from prose would be a guess with a projection under it.

Rite

Honey is what the promised land flows with, and the only sweetness most of the ancient world had. It was poured in Greek and Roman libations to the dead, offered to Hindu deities in the panchamrita, eaten at Rosh Hashanah for a sweet year, and named in the Quran as a healing. A substance that does not spoil, made by an animal nobody could domesticate, was read as given rather than produced.
