Cultural layer

Origin
Southwestern Morocco and western Algeria; pressed from nuts of the Argania spinosa tree, which grows only in this specific region; processing traditionally carried out by Amazigh (Berber) women
Routes
Moroccan Berber tradition, small-scale artisanal production for centuries, 1990s global cosmetic industry discovery, 2000s culinary luxury market expansion
Context
Argan oil was discovered twice: first by European beauty companies in the 1990s, then as a culinary luxury. Both times the Amazigh women who held the knowledge of its extraction were rendered invisible. Women's cooperatives in Morocco have since fought to reclaim economic ownership of argan production, and the recognition they won is on the record: the Arganeraie Biosphere Reserve was designated in 1998 across some 2.5 million hectares, and in 2014 UNESCO inscribed the argan practices and know-how themselves, held and transmitted by rural Amazigh women, on the Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage. The listed heritage is the knowledge, not the oil. This means the story of argan is not just one of extraction. It is also one of organised resistance that got its name written down.

Route

Pending

The routes are written. They are not yet mapped.

This entry's cultural layer already names where it came from and how it moved. What it does not yet carry is that movement as structure: ordered waypoints with real coordinates, and a mechanism on each leg. Until it does, the layer stays an empty slot rather than a drawn line, because a map built from prose would be a guess with a projection under it.
