Rite

Vinegar is the drink of humiliation in the Crucifixion, offered to Christ on a sponge, which fixed it in Western art as the taste of cruelty. It is also the oldest disinfectant in the European household: the Four Thieves legend has grave-robbers surviving plague by washing in herbed vinegar, and the recipe was sold for centuries on the strength of it. A spoiled wine became both an insult and a defence.
