Cultural layer

Origin
Aotearoa New Zealand; Piper excelsum, the peppery heart-leaf of the ngahere (forest), taonga under Māori custodianship
Routes
Used across te ao Māori as rongoā (medicine) and food without a border between the two; central to the Māori food renaissance and kitchens like Hiakai
Context
Kawakawa is taonga: a treasure under Māori custodianship, not a free resource. The heart-shaped leaf moves between rongoā and the kitchen without crossing a border, because te ao Māori does not draw one: tea for the gut, leaf in the hāngī, oil on the plate. The Māori food renaissance is not an upgrade story. It reasserts a food system that colonization interrupted and never replaced.

Route

Pending

The routes are written. They are not yet mapped.

This entry's cultural layer already names where it came from and how it moved. What it does not yet carry is that movement as structure: ordered waypoints with real coordinates, and a mechanism on each leg. Until it does, the layer stays an empty slot rather than a drawn line, because a map built from prose would be a guess with a projection under it.

Rite

Kawakawa is taonga: a treasure held under Maori custodianship with obligations attached, not a free resource. Leaves are worn as a wreath at tangihanga, the funeral rite, and the plant is used in rongoa where medicine and food are not separated. Harvesting follows tikanga, which governs how much is taken and what is said. A leaf in a kitchen is also a leaf in a mourning ceremony, and the same protocol covers both.
