Rite

The grapefruit's twentieth-century career was as an instrument of dieting, at the centre of the Hollywood diet from the 1930s, sold on a fat-burning claim that was never demonstrated. It is also one of the few foods with a formal medical warning attached, because it blocks an enzyme and can make ordinary prescriptions dangerous. A hybrid accident from Barbados became a moral object about bodies, and then a pharmacological one.
