Cultural layer

Origin
Upper Paraná basin (Paraguay, northeast Argentina, southern Brazil, Uruguay); Ilex paraguariensis, a caffeinated holly the Guaraní drank long before any European named it.
Routes
Guaraní knowledge, then a Jesuit-mission cash crop branded 'Jesuit tea', then a settler-state staple; today the shared gourd and bombilla is national ritual across four countries.
Context
Medicinal: the Guaraní used it as a stimulant and tonic; the same role it still plays, passed hand to hand from a single gourd. Blends: drunk hot as mate or iced as tereré with citrus and herbs, the social form is the point, since a gourd refilled and passed around is a way of holding a group together. The Guaraní origin is routinely dropped in favour of the Argentine national-drink story.

Route

Pending

The routes are written. They are not yet mapped.

This entry's cultural layer already names where it came from and how it moved. What it does not yet carry is that movement as structure: ordered waypoints with real coordinates, and a mechanism on each leg. Until it does, the layer stays an empty slot rather than a drawn line, because a map built from prose would be a guess with a projection under it.
