Rite

Kefir grains were a Caucasian secret held for generations, described as a gift from the Prophet in North Caucasian tradition and not sold or given to outsiders. The Russian dairy industry obtained them in 1908 through a scheme involving a young woman sent to charm a prince, an abduction, and a court settlement paid in the grains themselves. A living culture that can only be passed hand to hand was acquired by something close to theft.
