Cultural layer

Origin
The Indian subcontinent and East Africa; among the oldest oilseed crops, cultivated for at least four thousand years
Routes
Carried into West Africa and then to the American South through the transatlantic slave trade, where enslaved people planted benne from seed they had carried
Context
Benne is sesame under its Wolof name, planted in the American South by enslaved West Africans from seed carried across the Atlantic, and grown at the edges of plantations in the small plots people were allowed. Those seeds are now a Carolina heritage crop with a premium price. The plant survived the crossing because someone kept it on their body.

Route

Pending

The routes are written. They are not yet mapped.

This entry's cultural layer already names where it came from and how it moved. What it does not yet carry is that movement as structure: ordered waypoints with real coordinates, and a mechanism on each leg. Until it does, the layer stays an empty slot rather than a drawn line, because a map built from prose would be a guess with a projection under it.
