Rite

The melon is the fruit of paradise in Persian and Central Asian tradition, and a hadith describes the Prophet eating it with fresh dates. Uzbek and Persian growers named and ranked varieties as a serious taxonomy, and a good melon was a diplomatic gift between courts. In Japan the same logic went commercial: a perfect gift melon costs more than most people's weekly food. Sweetness that requires heat and skill became a way of showing regard.
