Rite

Peaches are immortality in Chinese cosmology. The tree in the garden of Xiwangmu, the Queen Mother of the West, fruits once every three thousand years and its peaches confer eternal life, which is why longevity peaches are moulded from dough and eaten at birthdays. Peachwood also drives off demons, so it is cut into charms and swords. A soft summer fruit was assigned the job of holding off death.
