sardine

It is nutritious, low on the food chain and sustainable, and it is priced as poverty food, which is mostly about what a tin signals rather than what is in it.

Cultural layer

Origin
The Mediterranean and Atlantic; named for Sardinia, oily and small, eaten fresh where landed and canned everywhere else
Routes
Canning industrialised in nineteenth-century Brittany and Portugal, which made a perishable coastal fish into a global protein and built entire port economies on it
Context
The sardine can made a cheap fish into a world food and then took the industry away again when stocks moved and factories closed. Portuguese and Breton canning towns were built and emptied on this one fish. It is nutritious, low on the food chain and sustainable, and it is priced as poverty food, which is mostly about what a tin signals rather than what is in it.

Route

Pending

The routes are written. They are not yet mapped.

This entry's cultural layer already names where it came from and how it moved. What it does not yet carry is that movement as structure: ordered waypoints with real coordinates, and a mechanism on each leg. Until it does, the layer stays an empty slot rather than a drawn line, because a map built from prose would be a guess with a projection under it.
