Context

Wild heart-of-palm harvesting kills the tree: extracting the core requires cutting the palm down, making the original harvesting method structurally destructive. The conversion to farmed pupunha palm, which regenerates from multiple stems, represents one of the rare cases where a tropical commodity industry adopted a sustainable alternative before the source population was fully depleted. This does not cancel the Atlantic Forest deforestation already caused. But it establishes that the industry could make a different choice.
