Cultural layer

Origin
West Africa, likely the Sahel; Hibiscus sabdariffa cultivated across sub-Saharan Africa for centuries before global spread
Routes
West Africa, Caribbean via the slave trade (Jamaica: sorrel; Trinidad: sorrel), Mexico via trade routes (agua de jamaica), Egypt (karkade), worldwide; to the Caribbean via the slave trade, where it became the Christmas sorrel punch
Context
The same dried flower is bissap in Senegal, zobo in Nigeria, sorrel in Jamaica, agua de jamaica in Mexico, karkade in Egypt. Its different names encode different diaspora routes from a single African origin. In the Caribbean it is brewed into the sorrel punch that marks Christmas from Jamaica to Trinidad: an African plant carried through the slave trade into a ritual that marks the calendar. Each community claims it as their own, and all of them are right: the hibiscus traveled with people, and each place it landed gave it a new name and kept the memory of what it tasted like. This means the Christmas drink is also a map of the diaspora.

Route

Pending

The routes are written. They are not yet mapped.

This entry's cultural layer already names where it came from and how it moved. What it does not yet carry is that movement as structure: ordered waypoints with real coordinates, and a mechanism on each leg. Until it does, the layer stays an empty slot rather than a drawn line, because a map built from prose would be a guess with a projection under it.

Rite

Hibiscus is the drink of hospitality and of the calendar. Bissap is poured for guests across Senegal and served at religious festivals and family gatherings; in Egypt karkade is a wedding drink; in the Caribbean sorrel marks Christmas so reliably that it is the season's taste. The same flower found its way into a ceremonial slot in every place the diaspora carried it. Ritual is portable when the plant is.
