Rite

Rhubarb reached Europe as a medicine and was expensive enough to be traded along the same routes as silk, valued as a purgative long before anyone considered eating the stalk. Its leaves are genuinely poisonous, which gave the plant a reputation the stalks did not deserve. Forced rhubarb in West Yorkshire is grown in dark sheds and harvested by candlelight, because light stops it growing. An ingredient that must be picked in the dark keeps something ceremonial about it.
