grains of paradise

A West African spice was displaced by a colonial trade route.

Cultural layer

Origin
West Africa (Gulf of Guinea coast); Aframomum melegueta, traded to Europe since the Middle Ages
Routes
West African coast, medieval European spice trade (the 'Grain Coast' of Liberia), declined after black pepper became cheaper via colonial routes
Context
Grains of paradise were significant enough in medieval European trade that the coast of Liberia and Sierra Leone was called the 'Grain Coast': a stretch of African shoreline named entirely for this spice. Its decline in European kitchens maps the shift from West African to Asian colonial extraction routes: as black pepper became cheaper via Portuguese and Dutch sea routes from India, grains of paradise lost their market position. A West African spice was displaced by a colonial trade route.

Route

Pending

The routes are written. They are not yet mapped.

This entry's cultural layer already names where it came from and how it moved. What it does not yet carry is that movement as structure: ordered waypoints with real coordinates, and a mechanism on each leg. Until it does, the layer stays an empty slot rather than a drawn line, because a map built from prose would be a guess with a projection under it.
