coconut oil

What changed was who profited from the advice, twice.
sweetsavouryveganvegetarian

Cultural layer

Origin
The tropical Indo-Pacific; oil pressed from coconut flesh, a cooking fat across South India, Southeast Asia, the Pacific and the Caribbean for millennia
Routes
Farmed as colonial copra across the Pacific and the Philippines; condemned by Western nutrition advice in the 1980s and reclassified as a health food in the 2010s, with no change to the oil
Context
In the 1980s an American soybean lobby campaign helped push tropical oils out of Western food as artery-clogging, which damaged Philippine and Pacific coconut economies. Thirty years later the same oil returned as a wellness product at a premium. Nothing about the fat changed. What changed was who profited from the advice, twice.

Route

Pending

The routes are written. They are not yet mapped.

This entry's cultural layer already names where it came from and how it moved. What it does not yet carry is that movement as structure: ordered waypoints with real coordinates, and a mechanism on each leg. Until it does, the layer stays an empty slot rather than a drawn line, because a map built from prose would be a guess with a projection under it.
