Rite

Salmon is knowledge in Ireland and a covenant on the Pacific Northwest coast. The Salmon of Wisdom ate the hazelnuts of knowledge and passed it to Fionn through a burned thumb. Among Coast Salish, Nuu-chah-nulth and neighbouring peoples the First Salmon ceremony welcomes the year's first fish as a returning person, and the bones are returned to the water so it can come back. Two traditions built entire epistemologies around a fish that leaves and returns.
