Context

The word 'ketchup' is almost certainly derived from the Hokkien 'ke-tsiap', a fermented fish sauce that Chinese migrants brought to Southeast Asia, and the Javanese 'kecap', which developed under Chinese-Indonesian influence. Dutch colonial trade then carried the word into English, where it eventually attached to a tomato-based condiment with no connection to the original. The linguistic journey from kecap to ketchup maps colonial trade, Chinese migration, and the transformation of meaning as foods cross cultures: the word survived. The original recipe did not.
