Rite

Barley carried the Eleusinian Mysteries. Kykeon, the barley and water drink taken by initiates at Eleusis, was the threshold of the rite, and the mysteries themselves grew from a grain myth: Demeter, her daughter taken underground, and the seasons that follow. Europe's oldest continuous religious ceremony was organised around a cereal, which is not how the continent usually tells its own story.
