This means that buying wild rice is never a neutral act: it is a question of whose grain, harvested how.

This entry's cultural layer already names where it came from and how it moved. What it does not yet carry is that movement as structure: ordered waypoints with real coordinates, and a mechanism on each leg. Until it does, the layer stays an empty slot rather than a drawn line, because a map built from prose would be a guess with a projection under it.

Manoomin is the reason the Anishinaabe live where they live. The migration prophecy told them to move west until they reached the place where food grows on the water, and the wild rice beds of the Great Lakes are that place, so the grain is a destination and a covenant rather than a crop. It is harvested from a canoe by knocking the seed with cedar sticks, which leaves enough behind to reseed. Treaty rights over those beds are still contested.
