Rite

In Japan crabs carry the dead. The heikegani crab, whose shell bears a pattern read as a samurai's face, is said to hold the spirits of the Heike warriors drowned at Dan-no-ura, and fishermen returned them to the sea rather than eat them. Elsewhere the crab is a zodiac sign in two separate systems. A creature that walks sideways and grows by discarding its own shell attracted stories about transformation.
