Rite

Cheese rolling at Cooper's Hill sends a wheel of Double Gloucester down a slope too steep to stand on, and people throw themselves after it and are carried off with broken bones, every year, for a cheese. Records go back to the early nineteenth century and the custom is older. Attempts to cancel it fail. A dairy product became the excuse for one of the last uncontrolled folk rituals in England.
