Rite

Caraway keeps things from leaving. German and Central European folklore held that it prevented theft and stopped a lover straying, so it was baked into bread and slipped into pockets, and a dish containing it was said to hold whoever ate it. It goes into rye bread, into aquavit, and into the seed cake that marked the end of the sowing in English farm custom. A seed that tastes of somewhere specific was asked to hold people in place.
