Rite

Asparagus was an aphrodisiac by the doctrine of signatures, which held that a plant's shape declared its purpose, and it was excluded from convent tables on exactly that reasoning. Louis XIV had it forced under glass so he could eat it out of season, which made it the vegetable of absolute power. In Germany the Spargelzeit is still an announced season with its own restaurant menus and roadside stalls. Few vegetables get a calendar.
