Kangkung is classified as a prohibited invasive plant in parts of the United States because it can establish itself in waterways. This classification creates real access barriers for the communities who cook it daily: the Filipino table that stir-fries it as adobong kangkong, the Malay and Chinese-Malaysian kitchens that flash-fry it as kangkung belacan. An agricultural regulation designed for ecological protection has a cultural casualty: a community's everyday vegetable becomes contraband.
