garden egg

It is the result of which agricultural systems were given market access.

Cultural layer

Origin
West Africa; a small white or green-streaked eggplant (Solanum melongena var.) distinct from Asian and European cultivars in size, color, and bitterness
Routes
Indigenous to West African agricultural systems, rarely exported, diaspora markets globally
Context
In Igbo culture, garden egg is offered to guests before a meal as a sign of welcome and good fortune: it carries a social and ceremonial function that the purple eggplant of Western supermarkets cannot replicate. Its white flesh and distinct bitterness are unreplaceable. It remains absent from every Western food catalogue despite being one of the most culturally loaded ingredients in West Africa. Its obscurity is not botanical. It is the result of which agricultural systems were given market access.

Route

Pending

The routes are written. They are not yet mapped.

This entry's cultural layer already names where it came from and how it moved. What it does not yet carry is that movement as structure: ordered waypoints with real coordinates, and a mechanism on each leg. Until it does, the layer stays an empty slot rather than a drawn line, because a map built from prose would be a guess with a projection under it.
