Cultural layer

Origin
West and Central Africa; Monodora myristica, the seed of a forest tree, roasted and ground, called calabash nutmeg in English and ehuru in Igbo
Routes
Used across the Guinea forest belt and traded regionally; never commodified, and never subject to the monopoly wars that its Indonesian namesake was
Context
Ehuru is called African nutmeg, which names it against a spice from the other side of the world. It is its own seed from its own tree, and the comparison only runs one way: nobody calls nutmeg the Indonesian ehuru. The naming records who was doing the describing. Ground into pepper soup and ofe nsala, it does work that Banda nutmeg cannot, and no fleet was ever sent for it.

Route

Pending

The routes are written. They are not yet mapped.

This entry's cultural layer already names where it came from and how it moved. What it does not yet carry is that movement as structure: ordered waypoints with real coordinates, and a mechanism on each leg. Until it does, the layer stays an empty slot rather than a drawn line, because a map built from prose would be a guess with a projection under it.
